Yin Yoga in Skipton
A slower, more meditative practice — stillness, deep release and rest.
What is Yin Yoga?
While “yang” styles of yoga focus on your muscles, yin yoga works with your deep connective tissues – the fascia, ligaments and joints. It’s slower and more meditative, giving you space to turn inward and tune into both your mind and the physical sensations of your body.
Because poses are held for longer than in other styles of yoga, yin gently stretches and nourishes those rarely-used tissues, while also teaching you how to breathe through sensation and sit with stillness.
The practice is rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy and Taoist principles, which describe pathways of Qi – energy – running through the body. In practice, what most people notice is simpler: you leave feeling calmer, lighter and more grounded.

What is yin yoga?+
Yin is a slow, floor-based style of yoga. Rather than moving through poses, you settle into each one and stay there for a few minutes, working gently with the deeper connective tissues — the fascia, ligaments and joints — instead of the muscles. It’s quiet, still and much more meditative than most classes.
How is yin different from other yoga classes?+
Most styles are “yang” — you move, flow and build heat. Yin does the opposite: very few poses, held for much longer, with props supporting you so you can soften rather than hold yourself up. Many people find it the most restful hour of their week.
How long are the poses held for?+
Usually between two and five minutes. That can sound like a long time if you’re new to it, but you’re fully supported with bolsters and blankets, and you’re always welcome to come out of a pose earlier if you’d like to.
Is yin yoga suitable for beginners?+
Yes. Yin is one of the gentlest ways to start yoga — there’s nothing to keep up with and no sequence to learn. Whether it’s your first class or your hundredth, you’re welcome exactly as you are.
Do I need to be flexible to do yin yoga?+
Not at all. Yin isn’t about how far you can stretch — it’s about finding a comfortable edge and letting yourself settle. Props are used generously so every pose can be adapted to your body.
Will yin yoga help me relax and sleep better?+
Slow, long-held poses and steady breathing give the nervous system a chance to settle, and many people say they leave feeling calmer and sleep well that night. Everyone’s different, but rest is the heart of this practice.
What should I bring to a yin class?+
Just yourself. Mats, bolsters, blocks, blankets and eye pillows are all provided. Wear something comfortable, bring a bottle of water, and dress in layers — you cool down as you settle, so a warm layer is lovely for the final relaxation.
